Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Rentz Scholarship

A deserving female student, currently enrolled at Alabama State University (ASU), will be awarded the Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Rentz Scholarship, in honor of the late mother of founder DiDi Rentz-Hughes. Mrs. Rentz was a retired educator with over 45 years of service and a passionate supporter of HBCUs. The scholarship aims to support and empower future leaders and scholars who demonstrate academic promise, a commitment to the community, and a passion for professional growth.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Enrollment:

    • The applicant must be currently enrolled as a Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior at Alabama State University.

  • Conference Attendance:

    • The applicant must register and attend the Brain Brand Beauty HBCU Collegiate Conference during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded.

  • Academic Standing:

    • The applicant must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

  • Essay Submission:

    • The applicant must submit a 500-word essay addressing the following topic: ​

Reflect on your collegiate experience – your academic pursuits, extracurricular activities, personal growth, and any challenges you faced. How has this journey equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and resilience necessary to overcome future adversity and pursue a path of leadership? Discuss specific examples from your personal experience and/or academic pursuit, that demonstrates your ability to navigate challenges, inspire others, and contribute to a positive and equitable society.

  • Demonstrated Commitment:

    • The applicant should exhibit a strong commitment to personal and professional development through academic performance, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.

  • Recommendation Letters:

    • The applicant is required to submit two letters of recommendation: one from a faculty member at ASU and one from a community leader, mentor, or supervisor.

  • Interview:

    • The top three applicants will advance to the interview phase.  The interview will be virtual and conducted by a select panel. 

 

Application Process:

  • Complete the application form available on the scholarship portal.

  • Submit the 500-word essay responding to the prompt.

  • Provide two letters of recommendation.

  • Proof of registration for the Brain Brand Beauty HBCU Collegiate Conference.

Deadline:

  • All application materials must be submitted by Sunday, March 9, 2025 at 5:00pm EST. Late applications will not be considered.

Award Notification:

  • Three top applicants will advance to the interview phase.

  • The final scholarship recipient will be announced at the Brain Brand & Beauty HBCU Collegiate Conference on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at Alabama State University.

Terms and Conditions:

  • The scholarship will be disbursed directly to the recipient’s ASU student account.

  • The recipient must attend the Brain Brand Beauty HBCU Collegiate Conference during the award year to maintain eligibility for the scholarship.
